The very first year my wife and
I had the Basket Brigade out of our home with my family and friends. It began
after hearing a story that friend, motivational speaker Tony Robbins, shared with
a group of people. He told a story of
when he was a child and his mother was unable to provide food for their
family. A man arrived at the door on
Thanksgiving and politely handed them a basket filled with a turkey and all the
trimmings. He said this is a present from the community and then left with only
a smile. That brief but very powerful moment in his life created a different journey
for Tony and helping others at Thanksgiving. It ignited a passion in both my
wife and I to pay it forward in our own community. Each year our Thanksgiving
starts with truly giving to others.
For those families in need, many
of our school children have both their breakfast and lunch provided for. We
deliver the food on the Tuesday before the holiday and provide food for
Thanksgiving and a little extra to help feed families during the school
break. From prior years some of the stories have
been heart wrenching. Last year a young boy said "Thank you so much! Now
our entire family can eat together." One young mother immediately thought
of paying it forward herself and said she could now also invite a neighbor over
that had no food. A single father with
tears in his eyes just said "bless you; my prayers have been answered
because I had no food left for my 3 boys".
This year’s annual event runs
from November 5th -19th. While all donations are accepted, we know that helping
others while we help ourselves is a powerful formula. At Chiropractic USA, we
will be providing up to $350.00 in new patient services in exchange for a $40.00
donation. Providing services at our expense, 100% of all donations will be
given toward purchasing meals for families with children. This year Costco is
helping us to feed more school age families from the San Juan School District
than ever.
My children have grown up feeding
families and this year our grandchildren will experience the gift of giving.
Together we pray and wish them a healthier and more prosperous future. Being thankful
for all we have and giving to those in need is truly a blessing. Pay it forward
this year and bring hope to families with children that are struggling. We
never know how far reaching what we do today will affect those lives in the
future. Today and everyday let us be thankful
for our health.
